Or worse, inflict ourselves with diseases that impair our abilities for a lifetime. Amidst the hustle and bustle, we forget the most important value of life expectancy - health. A healthy mind, body and soul in itself is the engine it takes for us to move forward, to truly progress and live prosperously. Why invest time in making money to enjoy life when you are not insuring your life itself, with valuable health?
Globally, researchers have examined how life expectancy changed with the combination of both exercise and obesity. Obesity was associated with a shorter life expectancy, but physical activity helped to mitigate some of the harm. People who were obese and inactive had a life expectancy that was between five to seven years shorter (depending on their level of obesity) than people who were normal weight and moderately active.
Physical activity has been shown to help maintain a healthy body weight, maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints, promote psychological well-being, and reduce the risk of certain diseases, including some cancers.
One may ask then, why dedicate time to exercise when obesity is not on my list? Age, however, is on everyone's list.
When it comes to protecting the brain, joints and health from age-related decline, there’s one thing experts know works, and that’s exercise. Among the many convincing studies showing the effects of exercise in preventing or slowing cognitive decline is research by Deborah Barnes of the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center and UCSF. Barnes and colleagues followed a group of people ages 70 to 79 over a seven-year period and showed that those who were consistently active had significantly less memory loss than those who were sedentary. So, why start at 79 when you can start now? It's never too late.
Too frequently a question asked is, "Why not set up a 24 hour gym for the masses? Why a specialised gym dedicated to a niche?" The question reverted back is, "Why rake in further profits for the gym when such a move would put everyone's health at risk?"
Getting the correct amount of quality sleep is essential to one's ability to learn and process memories. Additionally, sleep helps restore your body’s energy, repair muscle tissue and triggers the release of hormones that effect growth and appetite.
Just like exercise, the amount of sleep you need depends on your age. The American National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute recommends 9-10 hours for teenagers and 7-8 hours for adults.
